Gloria Elam

Gloria Elam, MD, MPH was born in Chicago, Illinois, but grew up in Nashville Tennessee. She initially came to the University of Illinois, College of Medicine as a visiting student from Meharry Medical College in 1984. She returned to Chicago in 1986 for her training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center and then joined the faculty at the University of Illinois in 1990. Even though she planned to stay here for only four years, she is still here!

Dr. Elam attended Dillard University and Washington University in St Louis for undergraduate school. She received her medical degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville and her Masters of Public Health at the University of Illinois, Chicago. She is the Associate Head for Clinical Affairs and the medical director for the Center for Women’s Health in the department of Ob/Gyn. She has served as the Clerkship Director, Residency Program Director and Interim Gynecology Division Director. She was elected as the President of the Medical Staff of the University of Illinois in 2014. She is a physician to many and has served as an advisor to numerous medical students and residents. She has also served as a faculty advisor to the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) chapter at UIC.

Dr. Elam’s clinical expertise involves the care of women with fibroids and the care of women with peri-menopausal and menopausal symptoms. She has been a longstanding advocate of improving healthcare access for the underserved.

As a member of several community, cultural and civic organizations, Dr. Elam works to improve the lives of those around her. She is a member of the Greater Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church where she serves as the Moderator of the Council of Servants. She is the President of The Society, Chicago Chapter for the Arts, an organization that supports youth performances and exposure to the Arts. She is also a member of the Xi Nu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated and Jack and Jill of America, Chicago Chapter.
Dr. Elam is the proud daughter of the late Dr. Lloyd C. Elam and Mrs. Clara Carpenter Elam, Nashville Tennessee and sister of Dr. Laurie Elam-Evans, Atlanta Georgia. She is the wife of James Norris, III. They are the busy parents of Clarke, Kendall and Jamar.
